Replace a file and notify customers

When you update a digital product, replace its file in ABC Digital Downloads so customers get the new version. You can also email the customers who already downloaded the old one. To send a new file to only some customers, see How to send updated files to specific customers.

Replace a file

1. In ABC, go to Files.
2. Click the file you want to replace.
3. Click Replace.
4. To email customers who already downloaded the file, tick Notify customers who have previously downloaded this file. It's off until you tick it.
5. Click Select file.
6. Choose the new file on your computer.

ABC uploads the new file and replaces the old one.

What changes

• The file keeps its product connections and its download history.
• It takes the new file's name, size and upload date. To keep the old name, click Rename on the file's page afterwards.
• Customers who download the file after you replace it get the new version, including from the links on their Order status page.

Email customers about the update

If you tick Notify customers who have previously downloaded this file, ABC emails only the customers who have downloaded the file before. Customers who haven't downloaded it yet don't get the email. The box decides: ticking it sends the email even if you've turned File Update Notification off in Settings. To replace a file without emailing anyone, leave the box unticked.

The email is File Update Notification ("Email sent to customers when a purchased file has been updated."). By default, its subject is "Files from your order #[order number] have been updated, download now!". On the Professional and Plus plans, you can edit it in Settings > Email templates.

⚠️ Important: Ticking the notify option emails your customers, so check the new file before you replace the old one.

Replace a file or send it to specific customers?

• Replace swaps the file for everyone who bought it.
